What is the eID function?
The eID function can be used to identify yourself on the Internet and at vending machines reliably and securely. This function is also a reliable way to verify the identity of your Internet business partner. Thus you can protect your personal data on the Internet. Why have I received a PIN letter?
You need your PIN to use the eID function of the German National Identity Card. The PIN letter contains the preliminary five-digit PIN. Before you can use the eID function you must change this five-digit PIN to your personal six-digit PIN. You can find more information on the eID function here.
How and where can I change my PIN?
You can change your PIN at the identity card authority when collecting your new ID card or later. This service is free of charge.
You also can change your PIN at anytime on your computer or on a suitable smartphone using the necessary software (e.g. AusweisApp).
Where can I find the ID card number?
The ID (also called serial number) can be found in the upper right on the front of the card.
